Tommy Miah's London Raj

The listed building at the southern corner of Ockendon Road and
Essex Road has had several incarnations in its long history. For many
years it housed Jays the Jewellers after which it became a hotel,
initially the Kervan, then the Elena and now Tommy Miah’s London
Raj.

The question ‘Who is Tommy Miah?’ immediately springs to mind.
He originates from Bangaldesh but grew up in Birmingham where
he trained as a chef. In Edinburgh he subsequently he opened the
Raj Restaurant followed by the Original Raj Hotel. He founded the
Indian Chef of the Year competition and became a celebrity chef
on an Asian TV channel. He also supports charitable ventures.

The London Raj is his first venture into the metropolitan hotel
scene. There will be 41 Indian-themed on-suite rooms and the hotel has
a specialty Chai Bari serving a range of quality teas, coffees, and
Asian inspired light meals.

Renovation and refurbishment is scheduled to end in October.
To mark the occasion the Tommy plans to invite Ockendon Road
residents to a celebratory tea-tasting! A discount will be available
to those residents booking rooms for friends or relatives. The hotel
will keep us informed about issues of mutual concern, such as anti-social
or criminal behaviour in the vicinity.

So we welcome the London Raj to our community and look forward to cuppas galore in the years to come.
